What is Let’s Read. Let’s Move?
Let's Read. Let's Move. seeks to combat childhood obesity and summer reading loss by engaging youth in summer reading and physical activity, as well as by providing access to healthy, affordable food. This initiative is an Administration-wide effort led by the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with First Lady Michelle Obama and five federal agencies - U.S. Department of Education, Department of Interior, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Agriculture, and Institute of Museums and Libraries. What did Colorado do for Let’s Read. Let’s Move?
Through a collaboration between InterCorps Council Colorado (ICC), the Corporation for National and Community Service Colorado State Office, and Reach Out and Read Colorado, Coloradoans were encouraged to organize book drives in their local communities. In coordination with Colorado Cares Day 2010 and United We Serve this summer long project was titled:
ICC Let’s Read. Let’s Move.
Reach Out and Read Colorado was chosen as a partner in receiving donations from ICC Let’s Read. Let’s Move. The Reach Out and Read Colorado target audience is children ages 6 months to 5 years and their families. ICC Let’s Read. Let’s Move. participants were encouraged to donate qualifying children’s books to one of the 146 Reach Out and Read Colorado locations in 46 counties throughout the state.
What is Reach Out and Read Colorado?
Reach Out and Read Colorado is an evidence-based nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.
Reach Out and Read Colorado builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning at 6 months of age. The 3.9 million families served annually by Reach Out and Read Colorado read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten better prepared to succeed, with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills.
